Activities Counselor Jobs

An activities counselor job involves leading participants (youths aged 12-18) in nightly recreational activities such as bowling, hiking, jogging, basketball, swimming, and hanging out at the residence hall. An activities counselor should create a sense of community between program participants and counseling staff. The activities counselor should work in a team with other counselors (including residence counselors), sharing information and duties. An activities counselor job also includes weekly registration and student orientation on Sunday afternoons. An activities counselor will have to be energetic; have a positive attitude; and be willing to participate in activities such as the variety show, dances, skits, etc. with students. Ensuring the safety of participants at all times and assisting with discipline issues are also key parts of an activities counselor’s job.
A successful candidate must have a flexible schedule to accommodate weekend and evening work for an activities counselor job. He/she should understand that he/she is a role model to the students attending the programs and therefore must follow all student rules. Those interested in activities counselor jobs should have completed at least one year of college or have experience equivalent to one year.
