Alcoholism Counselor Jobs

Alcoholism counselors work with clients suffering from addictions, primarily drug and alcohol abuse. In most cases, Alcoholism counselors help to guide clients through the recovery process, from discussing treatment options to leading therapy sessions and helping secure employment and housing. An alcoholism counselor’s goal is to help a person suffering from alcoholism or other addictions to regain control of his or her life and transition into a new, healthy lifestyle. The responsibilities of an alcoholism counselor can range from administrative duties and filing paperwork and documents to conducting treatment sessions and supporting those in their darkest hours. Alcoholism counselors manage a caseload of 18-20 patients battling alcoholism. Alcoholism counselors will be responsible for monitoring and documenting each patient's progress. An alcoholism counselor also manages individual case files, including conducting treatment programs and maintaining accurate notes of treatment progress and setbacks.
A bachelor's degree in psychology, social work, human services, or a related field is required for alcoholism counselor jobs. A master's degree is preferred for alcoholism counselor jobs. An alcoholism counselor must have strong time management skills and experience working with culturally diverse populations. A strong understanding of the nature of addiction, dependency, and recovery is essential for alcoholism counselor jobs. The person must be comfortable in a teaching environment and working in a clinical setting. Excellent communication skills are needed for conducting group and individual treatment sessions.
