Child Counselor Jobs

Child counselors provide social services and assistance to improve the social and psychological functioning of children and their families and to maximize family well-being and the academic performance of children. Child counselors assist single parents, arrange adoptions, and find foster homes for abandoned or abused children. In schools, they address such problems as teenage pregnancy, behavior issues, and truancy. Child counselors may also advise teachers on how to deal with problem children; work in child and adolescent residential institutions; provide, find, or arrange for support services, such as child care, homemaker service, prenatal care, substance abuse treatment, job training, counseling, or parenting classes, to prevent more serious problems from developing; consult with parents, teachers, and other school personnel to determine the causes of problems such as truancy and poor behavior; and develop and implement solutions.
Child counselors must have a minimum of an AA degree and two years of residential care experience. A bachelor's degree is preferred. Child counselors should have excellent communication skills and should be compassionate people. Child counselors must be patient with their subjects.
