Clinical Counselors Jobs

A clinical counselor provides short-term, solutions-focused, non-psychiatric clinical interventions to individuals, couples, and groups, including intakes, screenings, assessments, and referrals of clients as appropriate. Based on his or her assessments, a clinical counselor works with a client to establish an individual treatment plan, outlining the goals of treatment and providing the actual counseling. A clinical counselor offers prevention and education programs based on client needs and maintains all counseling case documentation in accordance with all applicable policies, laws, and instructions. A clinical counselor interviews a given patient to obtain information concerning the patient's medical history or other pertinent matters. The clinical counselor observes a client to detect indications of abnormal physical or mental behavior and changes the therapy as necessary based on client reactions. Clinical counselors consult with other specialists concerning treatment plans and amend those plans as directed. A counselor plans and administers therapeutic treatments such as behavior modification and stress management therapy to assist patients in controlling disorders and other problems.
A clinical counselor should have a master's degree in a relevant field and 4-6 years of related experience and training. A clinical counselor should have the ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, and governmental regulations; to write reports, business correspondence, and procedural manuals; and to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public. A clinical counselor should also have the ability to apply common sense in carrying out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form, and in dealing with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
