Correctional Counselor Jobs
Correctional counselors develop and implement programs to meet the individual needs of the inmates confined, including individual as well as group counseling. The employee must be knowledgeable of the CIM policy and be CIMS certified due to the importance of the decisions to be made. Correctional counselors must develop a general knowledge of inmates assigned to his or her unit or area of responsibility, and a detailed knowledge of inmates assigned to specific caseloads. Correctional counselors resolve day-to-day problems with on-the-spot counseling through a variety of methods and programs and must be receptive to inmate interests and the activities of those assigned to their caseloads. They must conduct regularly scheduled meetings with inmates to provide assistance with problems they develop while incarcerated. The counselor is responsible for providing individual counseling and conducting group counseling sessions on a regular basis. Correctional counselors gather data and prepare the required reports as directed by the unit team to report on an inmate's progress during regularly scheduled progress reviews. Correctional counselors must maintain appropriate documentation of each inmate’s daily contacts as well as group counseling activities.
Correctional counselors should have experience in related work, including time spent as a police officer, mental health counselor in a residential facility, or detention officer. Correctional counselors must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent in difficulty and complexity to the next lower graded level in federal service. To be creditable, this experience must have equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position.
