Drug Counselor Jobs

Drug counselors conduct interviews and provide counseling services to alcohol and other drug dependent inmates or offenders at a clinic. Drug counselors screen clients to determine eligibility for alcohol and other drug treatment programs and determine what resources are required (e.g., alcohol and other drug treatment program modalities). The counselor interviews clients and conducts therapy sessions. He or she performs overall case management and crisis intervention. Drug counselors are responsible for maintaining compliance with applicable authorities, standards, policies, procedures, and rules (i.e., the American Correctional Association, ODADAS, the Department of Rehabilitation & Correction, etc.). Drug counselors participate as active members of treatment teams, write monthly treatment progress reports, recommend verbal reprimands of clients, complete documentation (e.g., assessments, treatment planning, progress notes, and discharge summaries), provide input in structuring treatment plans, and attend staff meetings, training, and conferences.
Drug counselors must have an MA or MS in counseling psychology or clinical psychology. Drug counselors should have the ability to recognize unusual or threatening conditions and take appropriate action; handle sensitive interactions with inmates and offenders; define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions; write meaningful, concise, and accurate reports; and counsel inmates and offenders on sensitive alcohol and other drug dependency issues.
