Family Counselor Jobs
A family counselor provides intensive home-based family therapy to a small case load of four to six families. A family counselor should be dedicated, courteous, disciplined, and able to communicate well with others. A family counselor should also have high intensity, a strong commitment to the relevant treatment philosophies, and be open to high levels of supervision. A family counselor has to work during nontraditional hours and should be understanding of the need for extensive drive times. A family counselor should also have flexibility in scheduling to meet with families. Tuition and other competitive benefits are also offered for family counselor jobs. The family counselor program uses evidence-based treatments in which interventions are parent-focused, bringing change through the family, school, community, and peer groups.
A master’s degree in a social service field (psychology, social work, marriage and family counseling, etc.) with one year of experience in counseling adolescents is strongly preferred for family counselors. A candidate with a bachelor’s degree in a social service field and at least one year of experience counseling children and families may also be considered. A family counselor must have a vehicle to use for work purposes and have liability insurance.
