Patient Counselor Jobs
A patient counselor job entails moderate supervision and obtaining complex financial information regarding patients from various sources for the purposes of payment plan agreements, charity care, Medicaid coverage, alternative financing, and the verification of coverage from third-party payers. A patient counselor works with patients and families to find appropriate help to pay hospital bills; assists patients in applying for Medicaid, charity care, and family care; calls patients to set up required deposits; and follows up to make sure payments were made. Patient counselors also monitor reports, patient financial issues, daily registrations, performance logs, and staffing issues. A patient counselor must accurately update financial and demographic information in the clinical registration system, reflect the daily collection actions, and account for the status of patients’ accounts. Patient counselors work in partnership with staff members and other departments as needed to proactively identify and provide for the customers’ needs using appropriate quality service standards.
A patient counselor position requires an MS in nursing or genetic counseling and 1-2 years of relevant job experience. Patient counselors working in a multidisciplinary team setting should have the ability to work on clinical research projects with minimal supervision and provide teaching and mentoring. Required software skills include proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and/or statistical program databases. A patient counselor must be able to communicate effectively and should have excellent interpersonal skills.
