Program Counselor Jobs
A program counselor job involves conducting assessments and making appropriate referrals according to the established policies of the given department. This may involve completing intake assessments, making appropriate treatment recommendations, and providing resources for the community. A program counselor works as part of a highly integrated team to pioneer evidence-based interventions that help troubled individuals to transition back into the community and lead successful lives. Typical clients include individuals on parole, homeless persons, victims of domestic abuse, and people suffering from alcohol/drug problems, mental health issues, and mental retardation. Program counselors assist in developing, implementing, and monitoring consumer service plans; counsel consumers; and model appropriate interpersonal behavior. A program counselor manages the petty cash for the facility, coordinates logistics for the specialized services to meet consumer needs, instructs in life skills areas, and assesses consumer needs.
A program counselor position requires a master's degree in social work, a social work license, and one or more years of directly related experience. A program counselor should have excellent oral and written communication skills, excellent group facilitation skills, and the ability to provide group, individual, and family therapy. Program counselors should also have the ability to work ethically and professionally as part of a multidisciplinary treatment team.
