Student Counselor Jobs
Student counselors provide counseling services to meet the needs of students as related to personal issues, disabilities, and the school environment through individual counseling sessions, crisis intervention, referrals, workshops, and other methods. A student counselor’s duties include preparation, in-class activities, evaluation of student work, consultation with students outside of class, maintenance of currency in the subjects taught, and other responsibilities related to the teaching of the assigned classes. Student counselors provide each student with a written course syllabus at the beginning of the course, as per instructions in the faculty handbook, and refer students to appropriate sources for information on counseling and other student services. Student counselors ensure that all necessary reports are generated, such as attendance, grade reports, rosters, and class schedules.
Student counselors must have a master's degree in special education and graduate level course work in counseling, guidance, student personnel, or social work. Student counselors should be able to effectively teach, counsel, or work with persons of diverse socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds. A student counselor must interact effectively and work cooperatively with community college administration, faculty, staff, and students and have knowledge of community college programs and services.
