College Counselor Jobs

College counselors offer professional counseling to students on a variety of matters. Other responsibilities of college counselors include developing and evaluating programs, coordinating outreach activities, and vocational testing and assessment. College counselors are responsible for establishing and growing the college counseling office and guiding the members of each year's entering class through the transition to post-secondary education. College counselors provide a variety of services that students often do not realize exist or take advantage of, such as helping students select a major or occupational field, locating resources to research major and career options, and assessing the interests, personality traits, values, and abilities of students. College counselors also teach students how to make decisions. College counselors can also put students in contact with valuable resources for résumé and cover letter critiques and interviewing workshops.
College counselors should have a bachelor's degree or a master's degree in clinical or counseling psychology, 4-6 years of experience, a strong work ethic, excellent organizational skills, flexibility, ease and experience working with computers, and a willingness to coordinate efforts with others. College counselors should have an enthusiasm for teaching and working with young leaders and with the parents of young leaders to assist them in achieving the perfect college fit so they can make a positive difference in the world. College counselors should be familiar with standard concepts, practices, and procedures within their particular field. They must rely on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish their goals.
