Mental Health Counselor Jobs
A mental health counselor assists with patient care through the implementation of a structured treatment program, milieu management, and related patient care functions under the direction/supervision of a registered nurse. A mental health counselor functions as a member of a multidisciplinary team and as a member of nursing services to provide direct supervision of patients and to implement treatment plans. A mental health counselor establishes therapeutic relationships with patients, assists patients needing physical care, and maintains a safe clinical environment. A mental health counselor performs difficult diagnosis assessments, placements, and other professional casework services to assist mentally or emotionally disabled or chemically dependent persons to obtain health-related social services, in addition to acting as a program and casework consultant to staff.
A mental health counselor job requires a degree in social/behavioral services. A minimum of 2-3 years experience in a relevant job and the ability to work with a culturally diverse population is also required. Mental health counselors should be able to respond appropriately in crisis situations. A strong candidate should be able to understand, interpret, and apply complex mental health technical materials and applicable laws, codes, and regulations. Mental health counselors should also have excellent interpersonal skills and should establish and maintain effective working relationships with patients, families, staff members, and other agencies.
