Job Description:
Basic Function and Responsibility:
Under general supervision, the Academic Advisor provides an array of advising services and assistance to promote personal growth and informed educational and career planning and decision making. Specifically, the Academic Advisor works with new and continuing students in both individual and group settings to help students explore educational and career options, establish academic and life goals and implement related action plans. In addition to generalist advising responsibilities, advising assignments may include a special emphasis with special populations, students in specific academic programs or majors as well as specific career tracks.
Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Provide developmental academic advising focused on helping new, continuing and returning students with the exploration of their academic and career objectives. Develop relationships and provide ongoing communication with assigned students/advisees.
2. Participate in the planning, promotion and delivery of advising, registration and transition workshops and events for newly admitted students.
3. Assist in the daily operation of the Office of Advising, Transitions, and Student Success (on both the Skokie and Des Plaines campuses) and participate as scheduled in advising rotations.
4. Participate in all major academic advising initiatives and interventions including, but not limited to, new student orientation and advising programs, State University Days, Private College and University Days and periodic advising reviews of students.
5. Maintain accurate and timely advising notes in student information software systems. Complete and submit student registration documents for all students.
6. Establish and maintain collaborative and supportive relationships with academic division and faculty.
7. Facilitate student use of on-line advising and transfer resources to access relevant information for informed decisions regarding academic planning choices.
8. Assist other areas of the College as appropriate in recruitment efforts or the development of programs to support special populations.
9. In conjunction with Counseling Staff, make appropriate referrals for students in need of personal counseling.
10. Participate in Enrollment Center cross training activities to develop knowledge in other functional student affairs areas in order to provide integrated and comprehensive information to students, staff, and community.
11. Participate in Student Success initiatives such as the early alert program, student success coaching, and first year experience programming.
12. Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
Supervision Received:
General supervision is received from the Manager of Transitions and Persistence and/or Coordinator of Student Success Initiatives.
Supervision Exercised:
Functional supervision may be exercised over student employees
Requirements:
1. Master's degree is required, preferably in college student personnel work, higher education administration, counseling, or related field.
2. One or more years of successful advising and/or student affairs experience, preferably in a college setting.
3. Strong verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to develop and conduct presentations for a variety of student audiences.
4. Ability to positively and enthusiastically provide general academic information to highly diverse student population.
5. Ability to work flexible hours including some evening and weekend hours consistent with student and office needs.
6. Ability to read and accurately interpret academic and career advising information.
7. Ability to integrate college-based, Internet and other computer-based information resources and software into the advising process.
8. Capacity to plan, prioritize and meet departmental and institutional deadlines.
9. General office environment. Little or no exposure to adverse working conditions.
Additional Information:
HOURS: Monday - Friday 8:30 am - 5:15 pm
SALARY: $55,249 (2 position will be housed on Skokie campus and 1 position will be housed on the Des Plaines campus.)
Based on the needs of the college and with Administrator approval, some positions at the college may have remote or hybrid schedule options available. Please note, that during the 65 working day probationary period, employees are required to report to campus.
