Profile

Student Support Services, a federal TRIO Program funded through the U. S. Department of Education to increase the retention and graduation rates among 190 program participants, has been an integral part of the Hampton University community for more than forty years. In addition to providing free tutoring, educational and personal counseling, and grant aid, we equip our program participants to develop the habits of mind that engender long term academic and professional success.

COMPENSATION:

Commensurate with qualifications and experience; includes comprehensive fringe benefit package. This is a grant-funded position. Continuation of the position is contingent upon the continuation of related grant funding.

Duties and Responsibilities

The Student Development Advisor reports to the Student Support Services (SSS) Director and performs the following duties:

Recruit eligible students into the Student Support Services program

Implement targeted academic interventions for low-income, first-generation college students and program participants with documented physical and learning disabilities

Make presentations to student groups and help students apply for admission and secure financial aid for graduate/professional school, to include providing information on assistantships, fellowships and other financial assistance programs

Conduct (or coordinate) academic wellness, financial aid/literacy, career development, and socio-cultural workshops in collaboration with the Office of Financial Aid, the Career Center, the Student Counseling Center, the Student Success Center, Student Activities, and outside vendors.

Conduct Mid-term Deficiency and Pre-Registration Counseling to regularly monitor students’ academic progress and make appropriate interventions and referrals

Advise students on financial aid policies and deadlines

Collaborate with Program Director to maintain reports on students’ semester and annual academic performance

Attend all Student Support Services’ staff meetings and submit reports as required

Assist the Director with the administrative responsibilities required to effectively manage the program

Conduct exit interviews with graduates

Qualifications

Master’s Degree in education, guidance and counseling, or a related discipline.

A minimum of one year of experience in counseling and administrative and supervisory experience.

Exceptional written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills and demonstrated ability to work with students from low-income, first-generation college backgrounds and students with disabilities.

Ability to perform multiple responsibilities simultaneously, to work in a self-directed environment, and to plan and organize on both a daily and long-term basis.

Demonstrated commitment to the goals and objectives of the Student Support Services program.
